Choosing the Right Window for Your Garage Door
Windows on a home serve a utilitarian purpose, but they play a majorly important aesthetic role, as well. Try to imagine a house with no windows. It’s kind of like looking at a face with no eyes. While windows on a garage door aren’t 100% essential, they do add a lot of character, charm and uniqueness to any door. What types of windows can be put on a custom garage door? When the door is built from the ground up, the answer is just about any type. There are a lot of options to choose from, so here are a few considerations to make when designing a garage door.
Size and Shape
Standard garage door designs have a few options to choose from when it comes to window shape and size. When you design a custom garage door, the possibilities are endless. Windows can be nearly any size you want, and a variety of window shapes can be incorporated into the door:
- Bell top
A variety of different window shapes and sizes can be arranged into arches, horizontal and vertical rows or any other configuration you desire. For more ideas, see our custom garage door gallery for some of the doors we have built in the past.
Type of Glass
The type of window pane you choose not only affects how your garage door looks, it can also offer privacy. If you don’t want people to be able to see into your garage space, you can opt for an opaque glass that not only looks great, but also obscures any inside view. Just keep in mind that the more opaque the glass in a window, the less natural light that is let into the garage space. If you want a bright, naturally lit space, it’s best to choose a translucent type of glass.
Window styles have changed over the years, but many of them are coming back into style, especially on homes with a more traditional design. Just because a window hasn’t traditionally been used on a structure in the past 100 years doesn’t mean it cannot be used in your garage door design. That’s the benefit of working with an architect who sources their doors from a company like Cambek. Our craftsman can make any door design a reality. Want a speakeasy window that harkens back to the 1920s? We can build it. Want a completely new design that has never been seen before? We can build it.
