5 Things You Can Do to Prepare Your Garage Door for Winter

December 10, 2021

As the temperature dips, snow and ice accumulate, and harsh winter weather rolls into town, it becomes vital for homeowners to protect their garage doors and spaces, especially if they’ve made a considerable investment in remodeling them.

Part of a garage door’s job is to protect the garage space, but even the most high-quality wooden garage doors won’t adequately protect a home unless they are prepared for everything the winter weather can throw at them.

There’s still time! If you need to winterize your garage door before the most severe weather and temperatures arrive, these are the 5 things you need to do.

#1: Reapply Paint or Stain

Paints and stains do more than increase the appeal of a garage door, they also help winterize it by protecting the materials underneath from water damage. It’s best to reapply paint or stain before the temperature drops too much, that way it can properly dry and cure.

#2: Add Weatherstripping

If you don’t have weatherstripping applied around the outside of your garage door, now is the time to have it done. These foam strips help winterize your garage space and make it less drafty by ensuring the door is properly sealed. They can also prevent pests from sneaking in through the small gaps between the garage door and frame. Weatherstrips can suffer wear and tear over time, so it’s a good idea to replace them even if you have them.

#3: Have the Garage Door Inspected and Maintained

Garage door inspections include examining the cables and springs, testing the functionality of the door, checking the balance, and lubricating all the moving parts. This will ensure that the door runs well all winter. This is the best time to have your garage door inspected. You don’t want to have the door fail when the temperatures are low and snow is piling up.

#4: Check the Opener

It’s also a good idea to check the functionality of the overhead door’s opener. If it’s old and seems to be struggling to raise or lower the door, it’s a good idea to replace it before the winter. Also, don’t forget to change the batteries on your remotes.

#5: If You Frequently Use the Garage Space in Winter, Invest in a Walk-Through Door

If you use your garage space as a workshop, gym, or any other type of recreational area, you can greatly increase the comfort of the space by installing a garage door with a wicket, integrated, or complementary walk-through door. These doors allow access to the garage space without having to open the primary overhead door, keeping the warm air in and the frigid temperatures outside.
