Anatomy of a Garage Door: How to Customize Each Feature
Many garage doors may seem simple at first glance, and it is true that standard doors are rather simple creations. However, the amount of craftsmanship, millwork, and design work that goes into producing a custom garage door is more in-depth than you can imagine. Nearly every element of a garage door can be custom-designed and built from the ground up, making your door truly unique to your home.
To understand the level of customization that goes into every door we build at CambekTM, it is essential to understand the basic anatomy of a garage door and how each part can be customized and designed specifically based on the architectural style of your home. Here are the most important parts of a garage door.
Garage Door Panels
A garage door’s panel (or panels) may be the meat and potatoes of a garage door, but they are also the most important part of the door; they are the door itself!
The primary decision you can make when it comes to custom garage door panels is whether to go with a single panel door or a sectional door. A single panel door is made up of a single piece of wood that swings open (there can also be dual doors that swing outward). A sectional garage door is a door that is made up of panels that separate when the door opens and closes (overhead). A single panel door is generally more traditional. Because they swing open, single panel doors need space to operate. Sectional doors open vertically and do not swing outside the frame, making them ideal for tight spaces.
The custom millwork that goes into creating the panel(s) of a garage door is the most exciting part of the process. When you work with our design experts at CambekTM, you can create a door that is truly one of a kind. Our millworkers have decades of experience creating garage doors based on custom blueprints, so no design is out of the question.
Hinges and Handles
The hinges and handles of a garage door can be artfully shown or cleverly hidden. If you choose to show hinges and/or handles on your garage door (like many traditional carriage doors), you can choose the material they are made from as well as their size, shape, etc. Customization for these parts is near limitless. If you have a particular shape that you want to achieve, our fabricators and custom-tooling capabilities can make it a reality. These parts can be created out of wrought iron or from a variety of other materials.
Windows
If you choose to place windows on your garage door, there are many customization options to choose from:
- Size and shape
- Glass material type and opacity
- Placement (where they are on the door)
- Traditional or modern design styles
- Speakeasy windows
The most important part about customizing windows on your garage door is to ensure that they mirror the windows that are already present on the rest of your home — they should mirror those being placed on your door. If the windows on your garage door clash with those on your home, the overall look of the house can become jarring.
Once you know and understand everything that goes into manufacturing a garage door, you will be ready to create your first custom design. When you choose the right company to build your door, the possibilities are only limited by your imagination.
